Benefits of Early Intervention in Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Foundations for lifelong skills are laid in early childhood as it is a time of rapid growth and development for children. Some children may face challenges during their developmental journey and that is when early intervention can help significantly. There are many benefits of early intervention, and this will be discussed in more detail before.

  • Increases Developmental Milestones: Early intervention can help identify and address developmental delays early on and as soon as they emerge. By intervening earlier, Occupational Therapists are able to better support children in achieving and reaching milestones more effectively.

  • Plasticity of Little Minds: The plasticity of a young brain is an amazing phenomenon. During the early years, the brain is more adaptable and responsive to intervention. This is because the number of synapses per neuron inside of the cerebral cortex increases to about 15,000 from 2,500 (as an infant) as the toddler explores and learns new skills. This means that with suitable therapeutic techniques, children are more equipped and thus more likely to develop new skills and overcome challenges.

  • Prevents Secondary Issues: By addressing challenges earlier on, this can aid in preventing secondary issues from arising. An example of this may be that a child is having challenges with fine motor skills and can become overwhelmed and frustrated because of this. This could lead to them experiencing behavioural and emotional challenges; however, early intervention may prevent this as it addresses the challenges before, they may become entrenched.

  • Enhances Independence: Early intervention empowers children to become more independent in their daily activities. This could be dressing, feeding or other important daily self-care routines that an Occupational Therapist can work with children during therapy to help equip them with these life skills that they will need to be able to participate in their life to the fullest degree possible and maximise independence.

  • Family-Cantered Approach: The Early intervention process can involve the whole family. This can be done by giving tools, strategies and resources that will help you support your child’s development when at home. By applying this collaborative approach, it ensures that the child's progress is reinforced consistently in different environments and not just in clinic.

  • Smoother Transition to School: Early intervention can help children be better prepared when transitioning into a school environment. This is because, they have attained foundational skills that are necessary for learning, participating, and socialising in different classroom activities and on the playground.
